History of Tignes,

the village that became an international ski resort

The village of Tignes has evolved over the years, but it was in the 1960s that it really took off as a ski resort. The construction of the Tignes dam, which was completed in 1952, transformed the region, enabling the development of tourist infrastructures. Today, Tignes is synonymous with modernity and innovation. The resort has managed to retain its mountain charm while incorporating state-of-the-art facilities. Recent renovations and construction have enhanced the visitor experience, making Tignes a must for winter sports enthusiasts.

The neighbourhoods of Tignes :

different villages for different stories and atmospheres

Tignes Les Brévières :

The charm of a mountain village steeped in history

Located at the bottom of the valley, Tignes Les Brévières is the resort's oldest district. It retains the soul of a true Savoyard village, with its traditional chalets, typical bell tower and peaceful atmosphere. A former farming hamlet, it has evolved with tourism while preserving its authenticity. Today, it appeals to visitors looking for tranquillity, history and nature, with direct access to the slopes via the Sache gondola.

Tignes 1800 :

A recreated village, respecting its roots

Rechristened Tignes 1800 when it was redeveloped in 2013, this district is built on the former site of Les Boisses, itself a witness to a strong part of local history. It was here that many of the inhabitants of the former village of Tignes - swallowed up in 1952 when the Tignes dam was built - were rehoused. Today, the area blends traditional architecture with modern facilities, offering a warm, family-friendly atmosphere with a new lease of life and quick access to the ski area.

Tignes Lavachet :

A residential area born with the modern resort

Built in the 1970s when the resort was developing at altitude, Le Lavachet was designed as a quiet, functional residential area. Today, it retains this peaceful character, while being very well connected to the other districts thanks to the free shuttles. Le Lavachet offers ski-in ski-out access via ski lifts, and offers a more relaxed atmosphere, ideal for those who want to enjoy the mountains away from the hustle and bustle.

Tignes Le Lac :

the vibrant heart of the resort

The vibrant heart of the resort, on the shores of a rebuilt lake.
Tignes Le Lac is the historic centre of the new resort, built in the 1950s after the old village disappeared under the waters of the dam. This area has become the real heart of Tignes, with a concentration of shops, services, activities and events. Bordered by the natural lake - now rebuilt after the dam was built - it embodies the rebirth of Tignes, combining modernity and collective memory;

Tignes Val Claret :

at the foot of the glacier

The modern drive to the summits, led by Jean-Claude Bernard.

The last major district in Tignes, Val-Claret was developed as early as 1965 to provide direct access to the Grande Motte glacier. Jean-Claude Bernard, winner of the Grand Prix de Rome (1960), designed a major part of the main residences, applying his innovative vision of an "integrated resort": collective concrete buildings, mixed retail/hotel/housing areas, directly linked to the slopes.

His approach blended density, modernity and functionality - an architectural philosophy designed to transform the mountain into a living space in its own right. The buildings, which date back to 1965-1972, still bear witness to this ambition for a resort designed as a city in the mountains, encouraging total immersion in skiing and resort life.

Today, Val-Claret remains a dynamic and sought-after district, appreciated for its residences, shops, funicular to the glacier, and lively atmosphere linked to ski schools and festive life.
